The steps to early hearing detection and intervention can be referred to as the "1 — 3 — 6" PLAN! The steps include:

  1. Newborn hearing screening conducted prior to discharge from the hospital or birthing site.
  2. Follow-up hearing screening conducted for infants who do not pass the screening at the hospital or birthing site before 1 MONTH OF AGE.
  3. Diagnostic Audiological Evaluation (DAE) for infants who do not pass the follow up hearing screening before 3
    MONTHS OF AGE
    .
  4. Early intervention services for infants identified with a hearing loss "by 6 MONTHS of AGE".
  5. If you have concerns about your child's responses to sound or speech development, discuss this with your baby's doctor.
