Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Intervention is law on Guam! The Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Intervention Act, Public Law 27-150, became law in December 2004. (To read entire law click here) This website is designed to provide information for families and professionals about the Guam EHDI Project, including infant hearing screening and the importance of follow-up screening, evaluation, and the early intervention services.
Why is early hearing detection and intervention important?
- 1 to 3 in every 1,000 infants born in the U.S. has a hearing loss.
- Hearing loss is the most common occurring condition found in newborns.
- The first six months of life are the most critical for speech
and language development.
- Research has shown that infants who are identified with a hearing loss early and receive appropriate intervention services before six months of age have better language, speech, and social skills than children whose hearing loss
is identified later.
